DesignTO: Lower Dream State

The short film, LOWER DREAM STATE, elevates the voices of Baja Californians by revealing the complex social and ecological questions they face. It takes viewers on the ground, in the air, and over the sea, directly embedding them into the fragile desert region. The film raises questions regarding some of the most vital resource extraction industries: salt, copper, and produce. These ordinary resources represent some of the basic building blocks of modern civilization and part of daily global resource flows. The Baja peninsula represents a case study of how people inhabit regions that offer so much to the world, yet receive so little back. Advancements in architecture and urban planning, applied in concert with local knowledge, might offer a way forward that empowers both social and ecological systems.

GET COZY! 2019 End of Year Community Art Showcase

2 November - 26 November 2019

GET COZY! is the first edition of our end-of-year community art showcase at Weston Common that celebrates the unique talents of local artists who live and work within the Weston-Mount Dennis neighbourhood. We hope that you can take a moment to appreciate the diverse range of artwork presented in this show, make some new connections, and witness the sheer amount of tender love, joy, and dedication that each participating artist has invested into their personal practice. Winter is a wonderful time for us to reflect on our own achievements over the last 300 or so days, hunker down and plan out some next steps in our ongoing journey around the sun, as well as share some neighbourly warmth with each other. So let’s embrace sweater weather, put on your best woolly socks, grab a hot drink, and GET COZY!

At the Intersection of Nature + Architecture

2 November - 26 November 2019

Kanchan Quinlan is a Canadian-Indian artist and architectural designer. Born in Toronto and raised in India for the first seven years of her life, Kanchan was exposed to diverse cultures and places throughout her childhood. These experiences sparked Kanchan’s interest in the arts, leading her to pursue university degrees in history and architecture at the University of Toronto and Carleton University. Her architecture training in France, Germany, and India further contributed to the development of her unique painting style. Kanchan specializes in abstract acrylic painting to explore the relationship between natural elements and the built environment. Her paintings capture a flow of movement through the individual spaces, weaving the fragments together to arrive at the overall work. This process takes the audience on a journey into the detailed components of the painting, leading them to a deeper understanding of the sum of its parts. Every painting intentionally invites the viewer to reinterpret and respond to the mapped out story, dream, emotion or the real-life event in their on way. Today, Kanchan resides in Weston Village and creates custom acrylic paintings and offers residential design services.

Colours of Weston – From Djibouti to Canada

26 September 2019

Abdul-Wahad Youssouf started painting in his youth and has been painting for 30 years. He works primarily in oils in both abstract and realistic art styles. As a professional artist, he has organized exhibitions in small locations across Toronto over the last 15 years. Born in the Republic of Djibouti, the artist migrated to Canada in the 90s and is now a community member who lives and works in Weston-Mount Dennis. His body of work celebrates histories, the beauty of life in our dense urban society and his own personal truths that he holds dear to his heart. He strongly believes that the visual arts are a wonderful means to express oneself with unlimited freedom. This exhibition of exceptionally bright and colourful paintings gives us insight into the artist’s sheer joy in representing his emotional landscape onto canvas.
